Kittens!

Seriously. How can you not have a soft spot in your heart for them. Fuzzy. Animated. Did we mention fuzzy? We here at Cat 6 can’t get enough of them.

They remind of us of all those happy times long ago. Like when single speeds were actually ridden because they were bikes and not because they were trendy. Or when we could eat an entire Jacks deluxe pizza, go to bed, and somehow wake up 3 pounds lighter. Aw….we get chills just thinking about it.

Kittens. Some things will never change. But then again, kittens eventually grow up. They bust out of their cute, timid, fluffy shell and become something capable of striking fear in to even the hardiest of creature.

They become Tigers, Cheetahs…and Leopards.

(OK. They ditched the Leopard, but we just couldn’t figure out how to tie in a cat theme on short notice)

Remember. Real men like kittens. But on April 1, 2012, it’s time to embrace something with a bit more bite. Time for De Ronde van Vlaanderen. Dirt. Cobbles. And Beer.

Or at least that’s what we hear. While most of us at C6RS pride ourselves for our meticulous grooming habits and silky smooth legs, there is one time of the year when hair is our friend. No, “friend” isn’t strong enough.

It’s an obsession.

And that time is now.

Yes, it’s time for the annual C6RS mustache ride. A time when we put away those stainless steel razors and frothy creme and embrace hair. Manly hair. Sexy hair. Hair that flows freely from our faces like the rugged cowboys of days long gone by.

And you should too.

Join us Saturday, March 10, for an evening of bikes, beer, and, of course…mustaches. Already have a mustache? You have a few days to primp, gloss and shine it. Don’t have a mustache? Don’t worry, we can lend you one.

4:00 – Meet at King’s at 46th & Grand (Minneapolis)

4:30 – Head to Pizza Luce on Greenway at Blake Road (Carb Load)

5:45- Start pedaling to Town Hall Brewery (for more Carb Loading)

From that point on, it’s anybody’s guess. And hopefully somewhat legal. See you there!

Whew! Finally, the Offseason is Here!

And thank goodness…C6RS is beat. For months, we’ve been investing our heart and soul in cycling. First there were the Spring Classics. Weekend after weekend C6RS found itself elbow-to-elbow with crowds eager to fire up the cycling season. Well, elbow-to-elbow with the spectators that is. But it takes a hearty soul to be outside, sporting down-filled North Face parkas sipping caramel mocha lattes watching cyclists drive through freezing rain and high winds. Then there were the summer crit series. Talk about laying it all out there! We lost track of how many tubes of sun-screen we had to lather on, sitting there in our Jens knock-off t-shirts watching riders circle lap after lap in the scorching sun. Do you have any idea how hard it is to keep an iced latte “iced” in that heat! Just when you think your body can’t take anymore, along comes the Cross series. Once again, C6RS found itself among the huddled masses, sweating beneath our heavy wool sweaters watching cyclists anguish over sand traps and wall obstacles. Not to mention the countless hours scraping mud off our suede mocs.

2011 was a great year. One thing’s for sure. C6RS earned its stripes this cycling season. Sure, for most cyclists this would have involved actually cycling. But no doubt C6RS has emerged from this season hungrier than ever for next year. Like literally hungry. Not if you’ll excuse us, we have another pan of peppermint-fudge brownies to take care of from mom. After all, 2012 is right around the corner.

With a 2011 palmarès that reads like a school child’s almost failing report card, Category 6 Racing Squad is ready to demonstrate their mettle on to roads to this year’s Gasthaus Bavarian Hunter’s Oktoberfest celebration. Nothing gets a Cat6er out of bed and ready for a liver pull like hell-bent road ride to a beer festival tent at a German restaurant in the bucolic Washington county countryside.

Gather at the Angry Catfish at 8:30a on Sunday, 18-Sep-2011. Roll out 8:45a.

62 mile route. One water Stop at mile 41 in Hudson, WI. Plan on sending an significant other to join us at the tent, and give you a lift home. Otherwise, you must hobble home on the Gateway Trail of Shame.

State Fair Affair: The Hell & Damnation Experience

Fire. Rain. Ninjas. What do you get when you combine those ingredients?

B. Judgment Day and a big fat “I Told You So” from Harold Camping

C. Just another day at the State Fair Affair Races

D. Who cares…I’d rather see pictures of kittens

Now, we know your first instinct is to likely go with Answer D. We know…everyone loves pictures of kittens. But you’d be wrong. Kittens and Ninjas don’t mix. And Clive? Well, he peaked w/ Hellraiser and is sticking with books. And alas, poor Harold is no longer around, mysteriously vanishing into thin air. Wait, we stand corrected. Harold is still around. The Rapture never happened. And Category 6 couldn’t be any happier. It would have really sucked had God prematurely ended the Giro d’Italia.

That leaves Answer C. And Category 6 wouldn’t have it any other way. Between scorching 100+ degree heat and a deluge of rain that would make even Hurricane Katrina gasp in amazement, the State Fair Affair has been just that: unpredictable, lethal and, well…EFFEN FUN!!!

Hot, Muggy and a 100% Chance of Ninjas

So perhaps Spring is overrated. After all, what do we really need with a couple months of sunny, 70 degree weather, when you can dive right in to turn-asphalt-in-to-molten-goo hot. When you train as hard and diligently as Category Six, you relish the heat. It tests your mettle. It forces you to dig deep within as you thread through the pack distorted by the blistering heat waves rising off the road. It threatens to burst your very core as the acid bubbles up in your legs during that sprint finish. It reminds us that…riding in the heat sucks.

Speaking of the heat, this time of year brings out yet another thing to watch out for:

Ninjas. Yes Ninjas. The heat brings them out like standing water does mosquitoes. They stare heat in the face and laugh. They wear black during the hottest part of the year. And they love bike racing. Don’t know why, but they do. Doubt us? Only one way to find out. To be, or not to be…

watching the Royal Wedding that is. Seriously, was “not to be” even an option? After a fast and furious Spring, Category 6 found the timing of the Royal Wedding could not be any better. While we couldn’t classify this as a recovery period (as one needs a period of high-effort to recover from), we hung up our high-priced carbon wheels, geeky aero gear and leg-waxing creme and put our full attention in to all things William and Kate. While other roadies invested their heart and soul slogging through the rain and cold temps to hit the race season in top shape, Category 6 invested time debating the ideal thread count and color for Kate’s dress, whether the marriage now makes Kate’s sister, Pippa, off-limits to Harry, and the fact that the name “Pippa”, itself, is just plain cool.

Unfortunately, now that the wedding is over, we’re fresh out of excuses. Time to dust off that carbon again, shine up the drive-train and practice the finish line salutes. See you out there. And remember, if you hear a wheel coming up behind you and your heart and body begins to tense, don’t worry…it’s not one of us.
